Weird EXOPC & Win 8 Quirks Empty Weird EXOPC & Win 8 Quirks

Post by Tim Marcum Thu Jan 17, 2013 5:15 pm

I have hesitated to broach this because my system still works, but I have had three very strange things happens since I upgraded my EXOPC Slate to Windows 8 Pro.

The first is that I have to turn it on twice every time to actually get to the opening screen. The first time, it shows the small blue window and the dashed circle for about three seconds, then goes to a black screen. Nothing I do will bring it any further until I hold the power button down until it powers off. Then, when I power it on again, it shows the small blue window and dashed circle, goes to back for a few seconds, and then shows the opening screen that I swipe up to get to the login screen. This is simply time consuming and frustrating, but I would love to fix it.

Second, my Bluetooth mice seem to sometimes stop working. The cursor still tracks the mouse movement, but I cannot click or right-click on anything on the screen. I can fix it by using a Bluetooth or USB keyboard to Crl-Alt-Del and then clicking on Task Manager (I have to click twice -- the first time seems to wake it up and the second time launches Task Manager). This happens periodically and can reoccur during the same session. The touch screen always continues to work regardless of the state of the mouse.

The third problem may simply be because Millenium doesn't work correctly with Windows 8. I can't get the EXOPC to load Task Manager using the power button and light sensor, nor can I get the program I chose in Millenium to load using the light sensor.

Any suggestions about any of these issues would be appreciated. None of them will stop me from using my EXOPC or loading Windows 7 back on it, but if I could fix them, my computing experience would be much better.

I don't have a Bluetooth mouse or use the light sensor, but I do have the turn it on twice to load the start screen issue.
What I've done is always put it in sleep mode instead of shut it down (unless an update requires a restart). Not only does it avoid the issue, but the ready to use time is cut even shorter.

I never turn mine off, I hibernate between sessions if I don't have power connected, so haven't noticed the power up twice feature. I have seen a problem with touchscreen giving double clicks instead of singles though. It pretty annoying, since it breaks scrolling completely! I go to a different page and it clears up most times...

I am glad someone else has seen the same two power-on issue. It makes me feel less paranoid.

I don't use sleep or hibernate very often. I am never sure how long it will be before I will use my Slate again. Sometimes it is just minutes, but sometimes, like this weekend, it could be several days.

The mouse issue is more of an annoyance because I don't always have an external keyboard readily available to do a Crl-Alt-Del to choose Task Manager. The onscreen keyboard does not have an equivalent keystroke. The only good thing is that the touch screen always seems to work.

Use the new Win8 command of Windows key + X to bring up an awesome menu that includes a link to Task Manager, amongst many other commonly used commands.

    Dreamcat,

Your method still requires me to have an external keyboard available (although the Windows + X menu does have some great functionality). This also brings up the point that Task Manager may not be what revigorates my mouse. It may be going to the "Metro" interface (I know Microsoft stopped calling it that, but I haven't seen an easier or more apt moniker for it yet) from the desktop gets it started again. The next time I experience the issue, I will try simply loading the tiled Start screen and click on the desktop icon.

You should be able to use the Winkey+X function with the on screen keyboard if you have your settings to enable the use of the standard keyboard layout. (It is in "Change PC Settings, General")

It took a little looking and several changes of keyboard styles, but I finally found the standard keyboard layout with the Windows key. It also has a Function key, which I was missing.
This will make lots of things easier. Thanks, Dreamcat.

My pleasure! The first thing I do on any Win8 install is enable that standard keyboard layout. Wink

Weird EXOPC & Win 8 Quirks Empty Regarding the double start issue!

Post by martinjs Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:15 am

Taken from one of my post on the ExoPC forum, mine runs like a dream now. Quick start up runs quicker than with Windows 7 and I got the camera working with Skype as well.

Hi, Just thought I'd post an update to possibly help others.
I tried a few things, first I uninstalled Millenium, then I disable the HDMI drivers, but still it was freezing on start up.
Then I re-enable the fast start up option (which I disable original because it was stopping the tablet from closing down)
    and hey presto it worked.
I now have a faster start up, faster shutdown and overall a faster
machine. Love Windows 8 on my slate and as others have mentioned the
Auto Rotate doesn't work but who cares.

I usually keep autorotate off anyway. It is easier to use the manually rotation when I want it rather then it inadvertently switching when I don't want it.

Does this fix the double start problem I describe above?

As it turns out, "fast startup" was already turned on. I turned it off and it seems to have fixed the start up issue, without adding any negatives. cheers

    Dreamcat & martinjs,

Thanks! This solved one of the most persistent and most annoying aspects of using Windows 8 Pro on my EXOPC Slate. I would hate going into a meeting and have to start my tablet twice. Since most of the tablets in use are virtually instant-on, other people in the room didn't understand why it was taking me so long to boot. Of course, once I fired up Powerpoint or Word or Excel or any other real program (as opposed to "apps") and shared my screen by hooking up a data projector -- well, they usually start asking how they can run those programs on their Apple device, too. At that point, I smugly say, " You can't. This is a true Windows 8 computer, not just a link to content."

Weird EXOPC & Win 8 Quirks Empty Slide to unlock issue

    Post by hawkes2 Fri Mar 15, 2013 1:31 pm

Has anyone had any issues with enabling the slide to unlock feature of their Win 8 ExoPc? I have not been able to configure it on my machine and was wondering if others were having or have had the same issue. BTW I have experienced the turning it on twice issue as well.

    hawkes2,

I have to use a password both for my office network and for my home network so I cannot use the slide to unlock feature anyway.

I solved the second of my original problems, the on-again-off-again Bluetooth mouse. The mouse itself was defective. I use a different mouse and the problem has not reoccurred.

The light sensor just doesn't work with Win8. It won't perform a Ctr-Alt-Del when used with the power button and it won't start a selected program from Millenium.
