Dropped my EXOPC today and though nothing looked wrong it wouldn't boot. Tore it down this evening and the ribbon between the display and motherboard is broken off right as it enters the big square area attached to the screen side. :-( I know some people have had success with soldering a connection back on this cable, but mine is broken off so close to the end that it doesn't look like I've got any room to work with...

So, I guess I'm in the market for a new Windows slate. The problem is that it's going to be tough to find one that matches my EXOPC without sinking a lot of money into it. Mine was a 128GB drive with upgraded WiFi/Bluetooth (not upgraded to 801.11ac yet though, that was going to take a new antenna) and a 64GB SD card. Is anyone making one with 128GB of storage, a SDXC slot and as good or better resolution as the EXOPC? Or one that I can open to replace the drive to get the needed storage?

Sorry to hear that! I've had some close calls myself.

I went with an Acer Iconia W700 refurbished for a bit more than $500. It's very close to the same form factor as my EXOPC, but with better resolution, and should be quite a bit faster.

I'll wait until it arrives before looking at accessories, since some of my existing stuff may work. If nothing else my one remaining screen protector will fit. I can also take my time looking for a replacement screen for the EXOPC (has anyone been successful at replacing just the touchscreen instead of both the touchscreen and display, or are they too tightly bonded?)

I'm finding that Microsoft's Taptiles is completely unplayable without the touchscreen, though if you go really slow you can play Mahjong. Minesweeper is just the opposite, I have to use a mouse to play it...

That's a beautiful screen on the W700.  Hope you enjoy it!

From what I've heard, replacing the screen on the EXO, means replacing the whole front of the device.

RIP.  I, too, am sorry to hear about your EXOPC's demise.  However, I think your replacement would be my choice if my slate were to go to that great cloud in the sky.

And I ended up modifying my order a bit after some reflection... It's now a Acer Iconia W700P-6821 128GB. That gives it an i5 instead of i3 (and as we all know 5 just *has* to better than 3) and the larger SSD. The other didn't specifically state that it came with dock and cover/keyboard and this one does. It was about $150 more, but I'll be able to go a bit longer before swapping the SSD out for a 500GB version. :-)

Nice upgrade! That'll be a huge performance increase over the EXO's Atom CPU and sluggish graphics with newer software and streaming HD video.

Well, the new toy showed up early so I was able to bring it with me on this weeks trip. So far I'm pleased with almost everything... Except :-)The PO apparently didn't bother to keep the recovery thumb drive handy so his reinstall of the OS left me with all his data and programs neatly backed up in a Windows.old folder and only about 15GB free on the disk. Quickly fixed that but he hadn't installed any drivers so I had lots of exclamation points in Device Manager. A quick blip with a thumb drive got my wireless working which allowed me to download the rest of the drivers. Unfortunately there's still something misconfigured with the touch screen. If you let the screen idle for more than five seconds or so between touches it goes to sleep and you have to doubleclick the screen to wake it up. Plays holy heck with Taptiles! At the urging of one of Acers techs in their forum I've ordered the recovery thumb drive and will try a full reset after it arrives.

So much for the bad... I'm getting better at clicking on really, really small buttons (1920x1080 is a lot more real estate than 1366x768 was). Pretty much everything I do is much snapier and everything I used to do on the EXOPC is done the same here. My user settings migrated easily (though not quickly) over the wireless and I got in six hours plus without the charger hooked up (it uses a grounded cord and my outlet was two prong).

It turns the touchscreen on the Iconia is handled by the system as a USB device. Find the correct device in Device Manager and turn off power management's ability to shut it down to save power and the problem goes away.
